Choosing the Perfect Area Rug

Getting area rugs is a great idea. They will provide cushion, comfort and warmth over your concrete, tile or wood floor. Moreover, they will also provide artistic value any of your room’s design. Many designers recommend buying your area rug first. From its design, you can then choose colors to paint your walls and paintings to complete the decor. When selecting area rugs, there are plenty of factors to consider. Aside from the shapes and design preferences, take note of the following:

Budget

Apparently, not all area rugs are equal. Some are cheap, some are quite expensive. It all depends on the material and size of course. It is, of course, best to buy the best rug you can afford. Always look for good quality natural materials such as wool and silk. Don’t settle for any rugs just because they are cheaper. Find the balance between reasonably priced and high-quality material.

Wool rug usually wear well and even look better over time.  It has the ability to develop its own patina through exposure to light and air. Sisal, jute and grass area rugs typically cost less, but they are quite difficult to clean and don’t last very long. Sometimes cheap doesn’t really save you money as it may require you to get a replacement soon.

In general, use the cost of the other furniture in the room as a guideline for how much to spend, says Lohnes. In the living room, for instance, the rug should cost as much as the sofa, or slightly more. Whatever your personal preference is, it is critical that you set your price limit before you go shopping. Then perhaps allow about 10% flexibility in that range.

Spending a bit more on high-quality rugs is worth as it will last longer than mediocre-quality carpets at a bargain store.

Size

One popular rule of thumb is to pick a rug that is two feet shorter than the smallest wall in the room.  Hall rugs should have at least six inches of floor showing on all sides, while dining room rugs must extend at least 18 inches beyond the edge of the table to accommodate the chairs. In bedrooms, you can try placing runners at each side or at the foot of the bed. Placing a rug one-third of the way under the bed is also a great idea as it will provide you with a nice mat at the bottom of the bed.

How to take care of it

Generally, medium- to high-pile carpets must be professionally cleaned once a year to remove dust, allergens and accumulated dirt. Low-pile and flat-weave carpets are more easily spot cleaned, but they still need professional cleaning from time to time to remove accumulated dust.

It is critical to schedule regular cleanings of all of your rugs and carpets. After all, these rugs cost you some money so you should take good care of it. Rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting harbor a lot of dirt if not properly cleaned. You don’t want to be sitting on the floor with beetles to carpet mites, right?
